The Strategies page is a place for us to record the inquiry and thinking strategies that we use throughout the workshop. This is then available for all to access after the event.
In describing your strategy, you need to list:
Name of strategy
Description of how it was used - type of task, etc.
Reflect on the positives and negatives of using this tool/strategy
Suggest
possible modifications
possible uses
You might even want to take a photo and include it with the description.

Clock Partners
Grouping strategy:
Students draw & number clock face.
Walk around room forming partners for each number
on the clock face, eg. Christian and Kristy agree to
be 1 o'clock partners so they each record the other's
name next to 1 o'clock on the clockface.
Continue forming and recording partnerships for
each clock face number.
Positives:
Facilitates classroom culture of inclusion of all students.
Human Graphing
Line up according to categories/ criteria etc various different points
Fun visual way to move people about in different groupings. Good way to get to know a new group.
Ice breaker, good way to visually see the differences and similarities amongst groups
Faces Continuum
Use a face to describe where you are on the continuum of topics (happy, sad, confused etc)
Great visual way to see where the entire group sits on the continuum
At the beginning of a unit to see comfort levels with the subject
Placemat Tool
Graphic organizer (group task): rectangle divided into four quadrants with small rectangle in middle of page. Each member of group individually records their ideas and thoughts about posed question or sentence stem. Follow by sharing within group and collaborative synthesis of ideas to formulate one statement that group agrees with. This is recorded in centre rectangle and fed back to class group.
Also known as 'Heads Down Butts Up" because group members stand or sit around place mat quietly recording at first!
Does not need to be a rectangle, number of sections = number of group members.
Positives:
Facilitates active participation of all learners.
Authoring Cycle
Juxtaposition
Presented with various pieces of information, almost as information overload
Allows learners of various learning styles to appreciate different pieces of information
Good tool to use at the beginning of a new unit as a conversation point.

Thinking Shaping Up
Teach-Heard-?
Teach - I understand and could teach this to someone else
Heard - I have heard of this but I am not sure I could explain it to someone else
? - I have forgotten what the mean or don't think I have learnt this term before
Positives:
Self assessment tool - allows self monitoring.
Pre/post assessment tool
Facilitates dialogue between students about vocabulary, concepts, etc when used in small groups: students pair/trio to become teacher to others who have rated H.
H and ? ratings inform learning needs, hence guides teaching.
Transferable across all disciplines, eg checking understanding of math vocabulary; Unit of Inquiry vocabulary
Jigsaw
Doughnut Dialogue
Two circles of learners outer and inner with each having a partner facing each other
Have used this before, sometimes on circles of chairs which is easier for the little ones. Gets people moving and quickly sharing ideas with multiple partners
Good for turn and talk, reading shares, show and tell
